THE FLAGS OF DISCONTENT He wanted to stand from the crowd A life of crime was what he found Stole a 5 gear Cavalier But he left too many clues So sure that he knew the score But now he pays his dues Gonna get it, gonna get it The Flags Of Discontent Are raised up so high They fly for you and me The Flags Of Discontent Can’t get satisfied They fly for you and me Fly for all humanity Handcuffed and reading out his rights In custody for 700 nights Just a kid who got inspired To turn a hand to crime Now his head is on a stake In Borstal doing time Gonna get it, gonna get it He wants Utopia but it’s a sham At least he’s on “Crimewatch” once again The white flag surrender Those teenage kicks erased The white flag surrender Counting down the wasted days The white flag surrender As they gang up in his room The white flag surrender Freedom can’t come too soon The Flags Of Discontent Are raised up so high They fly for you and me The Flags Of Discontent Can’t get satisfied They fly for you and me Fly for all humanity

Hypermania 03:00
HYPERMANIA For 5 whole years you spent worrying What kind of world will your child be born? Pregnancy over; The dirty deed was done! What kind of child have you bought in the world? The scarred faces, the parents faces, Junior drained the mother’s breasts sore The vicious children, the devastation What kind of child have you bought in the world Hypermania, Hypermania, Hypermania You made your bed now lie in it. The hired nurses all looking after All trained in a lunatic home Then both the parents were claimed by cancer What kind of child have you bought in the world? What kind of child What kind of child What kind of child have you bought in the world?

JOIN THE ELITE Your father took you in hand and said The Army will make you a man Well either he thinks you’re screwing his Wife Or he’s shares in Ammunitions “You’re getting beneath me feet” he said With leadership quality Well Dad I’d rather wear your skin than join the infantry But the papers say “You’ve joined The Elite” Join The Elite, Part of the supreme It’ll toughen you up especially when That rigor mortis sets in Join The Elite, be part of the team It’ll toughen you up especially when That rigor mortis sets in Join The Elite; Cockfighting! Well your ordeal by combat is someone else’s bet Your game to be the target Then your ‘game’ on someone’s plate Like cocks that do the fighting As we speculate to win Speculate, accumulate and fabricate the war you’re in It’s too late, You’ve joined The Elite Join The Elite, Part of the machine It’ll toughen you up especially when That rigor mortis sets in Join The Elite, part of regime It’ll toughen you up especially when That rigor mortis sets in Join The Elite; Cockfighting! Outraged my friends they were shocked When they read this song Compare the sport to these words They’re bringing up his son To fight to the end Cockfighting, the metaphors relate to the truth Don’t miss this opportunity Of scooping tomorrow’s prize Estimated a million jackpot If you pick the winning side “All the best of luck son” Then a bottle of whisky got drank You slipped into a drunken haze Then he swapped your bullets for blanks His money went on the enemy side And he doesn’t plan for them to get beat His money went on the other side The savings went on your defeat It’s too late, you joined the elite

GIZZ BUTT NOTES:

“This session was shortly after the release of the English Dogs LP ‘All The World’s A Rage’ and the trio on this recording were still ‘officially’ the English Dogs, but these three tracks were very different to anything recorded by the Dogs beforehand and can be heard to be paving the way for the first true Janus Stark songs, ‘Clique’ , ‘Black Box’, ‘Barriers’ and ‘Enemy Lines’.

The first two of the songs, ‘Flags Of Discontent’ and ‘Hypermania’, often made it into the Janus Stark live set between 1996 and 1999.

Reading through old diary entries and notes, it looks like these songs were recorded 31st January 1996. My diary suggests that the middle eight of ‘Join The Elite’ was written on that day and it’s possible that I wrote that in the studio. There is a note for 5th February to meet the owner of the studio, so it was sure to be around these two dates.
There was a meeting with the record label on 22nd January and we were talking about a new video single. Maybe ‘Flags’ was a candidate?
We also played an audition for the manager of the band Ash, who was interested in managing the English Dogs from what he’d heard. That audition was on Tuesday 13th February 1996 and we definitely played ‘Flags Of Discontent’ in that audition.
Between the 12th and 24th March we toured UK and Europe with The Misfits.
Then we played a short tour in Belgium supporting the U.K. Subs on the 12th of April to the 14th.
These were the gigs when I filled in on guitar for the Subs because Alan Campbell seemed to have gone AWOL. He was there but he infuriated Charlie Harper by disappearing after soundcheck and being very late for the gig. That’s why Charlie asked me to play guitar. This led to me playing the Rock City in Nottingham with the Subs and then joining the band for rehearsals and songwriting sessions.”

Returning with new members a near 2-decades later they put out two equally brilliant LPs: 2019's 'Angel In The Flames' & 2022's 'Face Your Biggest Fear'. ... more
